trance.
/tra:ns/ - a half-conscious state characterized by an absence of response to external stimuli, typically as induced by hypnosis or entered by a medium.
trance is a complex kinetic lighting unit that adheres to my concept of inducing a meditative state on the user through movement, form, and lighting. Moreover, the construction of my product requires mind and body coordination, further adhering to the idea of producing a lighting unit that truly promotes meditation from start to finish.
The design takes insipiration from constructible lazer cut pieces that can easily be assembled to create a lighting unit. However, my design further challenges this idea by adding a rotating internal form within the external form that will allow them to move correspondingly in different directions. This design choice was made after rigorous form studies, taking idea from incorporating overlapping or repetitive forms to mimic the effects of moving objects, which in this case will be amplified by the rotation of the motor.
The motion sensor light is triggered by the rotation of the internal form, thus turning on correspondingly with the motor or by simply hovering over the light. The user could choose to allow the form to rotate independently or spin the external form in the opposite direction for a captivating scene.
The warm and dim light within the internal form promotes comfort, relaxation and coziness within the space, allowing the user to feel the calmness and tranquility necessary for meditation and achieving peace of mind. Furthermore, the intensity of the light has been diffused by the woven thread around the forms to minimize light exposure which directly affects the circadian rhythm.
